Blood Orange Review publishes emerging and established writers and visual artists. We welcome submissions in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art. Our editors look for compelling voices and work that demonstrates attention to craft. We want writing that changes us and challenges us to redefine our sense of perspective.

We look for voices, forms, conceits, logics, and occasions that surprise us. We like poems that teach us something new about what poetry can do, be, or say. We want weird poems and vulnerable poems and challenging poems and many other kinds of poems. We insist that we don't have a particular aesthetic, though we probably do (who doesn't?). At any rate, we are always trying to disrupt the patterns we, as editors, fall into--so please send us those poems that disrupt and resist.

Please send no more than 5 poems per submission. You are welcome to submit more than once per submission period. Please upload your work in one document with a .doc or .docx extension.
Blood Orange Review seeks to publish and support writers of all genders, identities, races, orientations, and ethnicities. We look forward to reading your work carefully, thoughtfully, and with trust.

Fiction: Send us your best writing. We seek an array of subject matter—space, futurism, strange worlds, alternative histories, romance, cyberpunk, steampunk, whatever punk you desire. Your writing will be evaluated on its craft-related merits rather than its adherence to the conventions of a sub-genre. Good writing is good writing. We especially welcome the weird, the abnormal, and the fantastic.

Blood Orange Review seeks to publish and support writers of all genders, identities, races, orientations, and ethnicities. We look forward to reading your work and giving voice to your creativity. Please limit fiction submissions to 5,000 words, and make sure to upload your work in a single, double-spaced document with a .doc or .docx extension.

Nonfiction: Send us your personal essays, memoir scraps, philosophical investigations, and lyric interludes. Regardless of shape or sub-genre, we seek writing that advances--be it via narrative, structure, form, idea, or intellection. We seek prose in which language weighs as much as story (...or even more, in some cases). Experiment. Innovate. Invent against the borders.

Blood Orange Review seeks to publish and support writers of all genders, identities, races, orientations, and ethnicities. We look forward to reading your work and giving voice to your creativity. Please limit creative nonfiction submissions to 5,000 words, and make sure to upload your work in a single, double-spaced document with a .doc or .docx  extension.

Art: We are seeking visual art to pair with our literary submissions and display in their own right in our online exhibition space in each digital volume of Blood Orange Review.

Any and all subject matter, style, and/or media welcome--though we do prefer 2-D formats for digital publication.

  • Send 3-5 high-quality digital copies of your work (including titles) with a JPG, GIFF, TIFF, or PNG extension. We want to get a sense of your style as an artist.
  • In addition, please include a short bio (50-100 words) and an artist's statement (250-500 words).
  • When you submit, please title your submission "Last Name_First Name_Title of Work"
